Improbable Luck’s father, was a champion. He won his second start on the Breeder’s Cup World Championship undercard by 7 1/4 lengths. By the time he hit the wire, the horse was the talk of the racing world. Thus, the legend of Improbable was born.

If Improbable were a human, he would have been on the cover of magazines. If he were on dating apps, he would have been an instant swipe right. Everyone who met the colt could tell he was special from the moment he was foaled. He was a miniature Adonis with a playful attitude and an eye for mischief. He was stabled with trainer Bob Baffert in 2018. That was quite a special year for Baffert. He guided Justify to win the Triple Crown, and when that horse was retired, he put Improbable in his stall. A sign of respect. 

His 2-year-old campaign was flawless, which made the fumbles in his 3-year-old campaign more pronounced. In his first start at Oaklawn Park, he surprised the racing world by losing his first race to a long shot. There was an incident at the starting gate (exposed years later), which made him more tentative in his future races. There was a string of additional loses as a 3-year-old, including the Kentucky Derby (worth noting that he started as the favorite) and the Preakness (he was the betting choice again), but his story was not over by a longshot.

As a 4-year-old, Improbable matured and relaxed. He went on a tear, and won three Grade I races, the top-rated races in the country, in a row. When he retired to WinStar Farm at the end of 2020, he was crowned Champion Older Male Horse. During his stay, he sired a few crops of foals, and his future seemed bright.

Sadly, in March of 2024, he died prematurely. He left behind a few crops of babies and a bunch of broken hearts. Improbable Luck is from his first crop. He carries the blood of a champion. Perhaps he can pick up where his father left off.
