We caught up with Improbable Luck at Churchill Downs this weekend as he continues to progress in training. What’s striking is that his hind end is so big and muscular. The hind end of a horse is the engine and is crucial for its movement and power. Here are some factors that contribute to a horse’s hind end propulsion:
- MUSCLE STRENGTH: The muscles in the hindquarters, such as the hamstrings, gluteal muscles, and quadriceps, contract and push against the ground to propel the horse forward.
- HIND LEG ENGAGEMENT: A horse’s hind leg thrusts from a position of engagement, where all three joints of the leg are bent equally and carrying the weight.
- HIP JOINT: The hip joint is essential for developing carrying power.
- CROUP (POINT FROM THE HIP TO THE TAIL): The croup helps transfer energy from the hindquarters for power and thrust. It should be round, muscular, and the same height as the withers.
Trainer D. Wayne wants to build up fitness and endurance and feels he’s still 30-60 days away from his debut.
