WHEN WILL IMPROBABLE LUCK RACE? ASK AN INSIDER!

15 Jan 2025

Hello Improbable Luck owners and fans! It has been a while since we last had an update on the horse. It is great to see him breezing at Oaklawn Park. We are thrilled to learn he has recovered from his leg infection. Trainer Charlie Whittingham used to say, "Horses are like strawberries. They go bad overnight." In other words, never take a horse's health for granted. It can turn on a dime, as we just saw.

Now that we know the horse is okay, it's time to discuss the question I have been asked for months: When is he going to race? At this moment, we can only speculate. So, I spoke with BIGPLAY Sport's own Ken Myles for some insight. Ken has been involved with Improbable Luck since he was first purchased at auction. He is as close to the horse and MyRacehorse team as you could ever get. Ken feels it is not out of the question to think Lukas will start Improbable Luck in a race in the next month or so. Lukas is known for attacking the Triple Crown trail like a hound dog attacks a scent. It's not hard to believe he would want to give the handsome son of Improbable a chance to earn his way to the classic races. If this is the case, we may see our horse throw in a workout or two and then find his way to a maiden special weight. Ken can only speculate, of course. Ultimately, it is up to Lukas and the horse to tell us. However, it is nice to know that people close to the horse are just as excited to see him run as the rest of us.

Lastly, here is my take. It could be a good thing that the horse has not started yet. I want Improbable Luck to be as ready and mature as possible to race before he starts. I can not think of a time in the annals of thoroughbred history where giving a horse time to mature was a negative thing. I can think of dozens where it was a positive, though. Zenyatta springs to mind first. It is believed that Zenyatta's trainer allowing her the time to develop and grow into herself before she raced is what led to her success. Lukas is known to enter his horses into races and get them going fast. He is old school and loves to run them. Last year, the master trainer won a Preakness with Seize the Grey because he dared to enter a big race where others would have stayed away. It is one of the reasons I love him. He is fearless. Give him the right horse, and he will max out their potential. Improbable Luck was no doubt building up to a race with every workout. Then, he suffered a setback. However, setbacks are sometimes a blessing in disguise. Improbable Luck will only benefit from the extra time he has gotten. That is how I am choosing to see this. Improbable Luck proved he is a fighter by overcoming his infection. I can't wait to see him prove he is a fighter on the track. The time will come for that.
